Included Areas Breakdown (1)
8×8 Room64.00 sq. ft.

Step 1.1 Convert to Inches & Divide by 144:

8×8 Room: 8 ft 0 in × 8 ft 0 in = 96" × 96" = 9,216 sq. in. ÷ 144 = 64.0000 sq. ft. (64.00 sq. ft.)

Step 2. Apply Waste Allowance Factor:

64.0000 sq. ft. × (1 + 10%) = 70.4000 sq. ft. to order (+6.4000 sq. ft. waste)

Step 3. Calculate Tile Quantity:

Tile Size: 2" × 2" = 4 sq. in. (0.028 sq. ft. coverage). Required area with 10% waste: 70.4000 sq. ft. ÷ 0.028 sq. ft. = 2534.40 → 2535 tiles.

Installation & Layout Tips for 8×8 Room

  • Base area is 64 sq. ft. (length 8' × width 8').
  • Each 2" × 2" covers 0.03 sq. ft.
  • Recommended order with 10% waste: 70.4 sq. ft. (2535 tiles).
Step-by-Step Proof

Worked Calculation (8 ft × 8 ft)

• Net Area: 64 sq. ft.

• Cutting Waste (10%): +6.4 sq. ft.

• Total Material to Order: 70.4 sq. ft.

• Individual Tile Count: ~2535 pieces

8' × 8' = 64 sq. ft. Plus 10% waste = 70.4 sq. ft. Dividing by 0.03 sq. ft. per tile gives 2535 individual tiles.

How Tile Square Footage & Quantity Are Calculated

Estimating tile requires three basic mathematical steps: converting room measurements into square feet, adding an essential cutting waste factor, and dividing by each tile's surface coverage.

1

Convert to Square Feet

(Length" × Width") ÷ 144 = Sq. Ft.

Convert feet and inches to total inches, multiply length by width to get square inches, then divide by 144 (since 1 sq. ft. = 12" × 12" = 144 sq. in.).

2

Add Waste Factor (10%–15%)

Net Sq. Ft. × (1 + Waste %) = Total

Every installation produces cut remnants around baseboards, toilets, and doorways. A minimum 10% waste buffer prevents running short mid-job.

3

Determine Tile Count

Total Sq. Ft. ÷ Tile Coverage = Pieces

Divide gross square footage by individual tile coverage (e.g. 12"×24" = 2 sq. ft. per tile). Always round up to the nearest whole tile and box.

Standard Industry Benchmark

Worked Example: Measuring a Bathroom Floor

Room Size: 8 ft 7 in × 5 ft 2 in

1. Convert room dimensions to total inches:

  • Length: (8 ft × 12) + 7 in = 96 in + 7 in = 103 inches
  • Width: (5 ft × 12) + 2 in = 60 in + 2 in = 62 inches

2. Multiply inches and divide by 144 (Net Area):

103 in × 62 in = 6,386 square inches
6,386 sq. in. ÷ 144 = 44.3472 sq. ft. net (displays as 44.35 sq. ft.)

3. Apply 10% waste factor (Gross Area to Order):

44.3472 sq. ft. × 1.10 = 48.7819 sq. ft. to order (displays as 48.78 sq. ft.)

4. Compute tile count & box requirements (12" × 24" tiles):

Each 12" × 24" tile = (12 × 24) ÷ 144 = 2.0 sq. ft. coverage
48.7819 sq. ft. ÷ 2.0 sq. ft. = 24.39 → 25 tiles needed (rounded up)
At 8 tiles per box: 25 ÷ 8 = 3.125 → 4 boxes needed

5. Estimated Material Cost (at $4.80/sq. ft.):

48.7819 sq. ft. × $4.80/sq. ft. = $234.15 (estimated total cost including 10% waste)

How to Measure Rooms Accurately

  • Measure at the widest points: Baseboards and framing are rarely perfectly square. Measure both ends of a room and use the larger measurement.
  • Break irregular rooms into zones: For L-shaped layouts or rooms with closets, measure each rectangular section separately as Area 1, Area 2, etc.
  • Shower walls and wet areas: Measure from the top of the shower pan or tub lip up to your desired finished tile line or ceiling.
  • Backsplashes: Measure the length of the countertop and height from counter to upper cabinets (standard is 18 inches). Deduct window openings.

Choosing the Right Waste Allowance

10% Waste Factor (Standard)Recommended

Ideal for straight stack or simple 1/3 offset running bond in square or rectangular rooms.

15% Waste Factor (Diagonal / Complex)Diagonal 45°

Essential when laying tile at a 45-degree angle, or in rooms with many jogs, alcoves, and pipes.

18% – 20% Waste Factor (Herringbone / Chevron)Intricate

Herringbone patterns require angle cuts on all four wall perimeters, producing triangular scrap that cannot be reused.
